With Their Rebrand, Ugmonk Designed a New Suite of Custom Packaging

By Katelan Cunningham · August 2, 2016

Rebrands are not to be taken lightly. Seven years after launching, Ugmonk’s recent redesign by founder Jeff Sheldon was a year in the making. To reflect the brand’s growth and ongoing dedication to simple, geometric design, the rebrand reflects the next phase of growth for the lifestyle brand. From the logo to the packaging, Jeff started from scratch with each element of the brand.

Ugmonk’s biggest sellers are their graphic t-shirts, followed by other graphic goodies like hats, bags, and prints. Before their redesign, they were shipping in all blank containers — boxes, poly mailers, and rigid mailers. They used custom tape on some of their shipping in addition to stamping as they shipped. This is a great model when you’re starting out, but when time spent stamping starts to offset the price of custom packaging, then it’s time to make the switch!

With higher volumes and new branding, Ugmonk went for a full suite of custom packaging and they're only spending an average of $0.65 per package. Jeff initially hesitated to make the switch for his small business because of the high minimum quantities at other packaging suppliers, but at Lumi he got the right amount of custom packaging and his average packaging costs per order are the same as when he was shipping with blank materials.

“Lumi allows me to focus more time on designing and less time searching for new packaging manufacturers and dealing with vendor issues.”

Ugmonk's new packaging suite features custom versions of blank products they were already using like poly mailers, gummed tape, and rigid mailers. They also added custom cotton bags and custom boxes to the lineup for larger orders. Jeff chose to alternate the Ugmonk logo and wordmarks using a palette of black, white and kraft. The result is a fulfillment system that’s downright poetic.

Another reason Jeff hesitated to dive into custom packaging was the demand of managing multiple packaging vendors. When you’re running a shop with a small team, managing product and packaging vendors becomes a total time suck. But now, Jeff can order his whole suit, right from his Dashboard on Lumi.com.

We’re really excited to work with an ambitious, beautiful brand like Ugmonk to get thoughtful packaging worthy of thoughtful products. Read more from Jeff about his packaging design and the Ugmonk rebrand.
