What is Tooling? Getting to Know Dies and Plates

Jesse Genet · March 29, 2017

In packaging, “tooling” refers to the dies and plates used to manufacture your boxes. To know more about how tooling works and why you have to pay for it, you have to know how tooling works.

First your box design is printed to a sheet of corrugate using a printing plate, custom made for your design.
Next, cutting dies are custom made to cut your box shape out of corrugate.

The printing plate and cutting die are larger pieces of custom made equipment that pay off in large volumes — they’re good for hundreds of thousands of boxes! It’s an investment up front, but the pay off is durable, high quality custom boxes.
